Thirty years ago, current Park Springs Member Marvin Himmel was still CEO of his own business in Chicago that specialized in Convention and Travel Management. He and his beloved wife Maxine decided to support deserving students enrolled in a School of Hospitality and Management. “We wanted to give something back to our industry,” says Mr. Himmel.

After researching several colleges and Universities, he made contact with FIU’s Director of Development, Rocco DiAngelo. Together they created an annual grant: The Marvin and Maxine Himmel Scholarship, designed to assist a deserving student with completing his or her degree while having to work at the same time.

“At FIU there are many students on a tight budget, often from countries outside of the U.S., who come here to get a degree before returning home to launch their careers. Our annual grants help to ease their financial needs so they can focus on their coursework” notes Mr. Himmel, who is one the schools oldest individual donors.

“Over the past three decades, I have been able to help more the 40 outstanding students who are devoted to work in this field.  My annual gifts, together with generous contributions from my friends and the Park Springs Musical Production Team, have made this a program that will continue to help students well into future years.”

Mr. and Mrs. Himmel moved into Park Springs in 2005 from San Diego.  His son Jay lives nearby. “Maxine and I were married for 65 ½ years. She was my biggest fan and very supportive of our work at FIU,” he says.

This year, Mr. Himmel invited Park Springs’ Executive Chef Derrick Henry to accompany him to the FIU Awards Luncheon. “Chef Derrick is a culinary star, and we are so lucky to have him at Park Springs,” says Mr. Himmel. “I was honored to introduce him to the Dean and the top educational staff at FIU. They were very impressed with his many culinary awards and his work toward becoming a Master Chef. I hope this will be the beginning of a long and mutually beneficial relationship between Derrick and FIU. “

Mr. Himmel delights in finding opportunities to make a difference. His support of FIU students is unique, as is his involvement at Park Springs where, since 2007, he has produced an annual musical production for Park Springs Members and their guests.

In February of 2015 the TV show “CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood” recognized his work in one of their many  segments. The airing has brought a multitude of inquiries and national recognition of the Park Springs luxury retirement community.

Thank you for all you do, Mr. Himmel!
