senior livingMr. and Mrs. Gerdes, who moved from their three-story home in the Druid Hills neighborhood in Atlanta to Park Springs in December 2013, were ‘not really looking’ for a different lifestyle – until their friend and former neighbor, Mrs. Goldstein, invited them to visit her at Park Springs, the luxury resort-style retirement community in Stone Mountain.

“We were happily surprised by Park Springs’ completely different concept of senior living,” notes Mr. Gerdes, a retired physical chemist who moved with his wife and two sons from Hannover (Germany) to Atlanta in 1964. Their third son was born in the USA. Today, their family has grown to include six granddaughters.

“Park Springs’ resort-style setting is beautifully landscaped, our new, spacious home is filled with light and has a beautiful view toward Stone Mountain Park, and Park Springs has so many amenities for us to enjoy, like the pool, four different restaurants, and a host of fun and intellectual activities. We are pleased to be here!

“It became clear to us both that it is best to make this life-changing decision to move when you’re in the driver’s seat, while you can,” Mr. Gerdes emphasizes. “Right now, we are still very active and able to do everything.

“We also know how important it is to remain socially active – another great reason to move to Park Springs!”

After just a few months in their new home in the Golf View Villas, Mr. and Mrs. Gerdes marvel at the ease with which they have already met so many friendly and interesting people here. “You can quote us on this,” says Mrs. Gerdes, “We have not seen the first grumpy person here at Park Springs. The Members and also the Staff have been so friendly and welcoming to us.”

Initially, Mr. Gerdes was invited to teach and do research at Georgia Institute of Technology for just one year, but Atlanta quickly became home. In addition to his work in academia, Mr. Gerdes founded and sold a number of companies, and also enjoyed an illustrious career with ConTel, the third-largest independent telephone company in the country.

Mrs. Gerdes, who had studied in Germany to become a medical doctor, went to Georgia State University where she completed her MS in Microbiology – in addition to being a full-time mother. Ultimately, she accepted a position as Southeastern Business Manager with Lufthansa German Airlines in Atlanta.

Avid global travelers, both by plane and by car, Mr. and Mrs. Gerdes express a great fondness for Georgia’s Cumberland Island. “We love to be active and explore, and we enjoy the fact that we are now so close to Stone Mountain where we love to hike up and down the mountain,” according to Mr. Gerdes.

“Next on our list is to make an appointment with Park Springs’ fitness manager, Reggie Porter. We want to get started on a tailor-made exercise program – have you seen the beautiful Fitness Center here?”

I’m proud to count the Gerdeses among my very dearest friends – and neighbors for 45 years. Thanks to all who have given them a warm welcome here.
