“I’m 81 and I’m playing better than ever.”

Bill Ballard always loved golf. During his career as a banker he was able to sneak in a weekly round, but that was about it. When he and his wife Juanita began the search for a retirement community in 2006, proximity to a good golf course was on their list.

“When we first saw Park Springs and realized how close it was to Stone Mountain’s two wonderful courses – one of which was designed by Robert Trent Jones – we were very interested.”

Interested? Passionate may be more like it. Nearly every day, Bill and a couple of Park Springs golfing buddies tee off before 9 a.m.

“I jump in my golf cart, go out the Park Springs private gate and I’m on the first tee in five minutes,” says Bill.

Six years of daily play have helped Bill become the golfer he always hoped he could be. “I’m 81 and I’m playing better than ever.”

Bill loves the game in part because success is so illusive. “It’s all about the challenge of improving,” he notes.

Juanita stays busy around their home and at Park Springs. She volunteers in the Park Springs Market and at Cobblestone, the community’s onsite health center.

“It seems like there are always new things going on – musical programs, games and activities.” Juanita stays fit with water aerobics and exercise and stretch classes at the on-campus fitness center.

“It really comes down to enjoying leisure time – not having to do all the things you do when you have a house, including cooking,” she adds.

That means more time for the easy socializing which is a big part of the Park Springs lifestyle. The Ballards often meet friends at the Pub for a drink before going to dinner together in the dining room. They’ve participated in several community trips, including two Caribbean cruises, and look forward to more travel this fall.

Their busy life is enhanced by the presence of their children and grandchildren, who live nearby. One grandson gets to Park Springs as often as he can to play golf with his grandfather.

Always early risers, Juanita and Bill enjoy starting their day with breakfast in their villa before Bill leaves for the golf course. Says Juanita, “It’s what we’ve always done. Before we retired we would always get up at five so we’d have this time together. Now we sleep in… ’til six!”
