Garnie-ThomasOn August 31, 2014, the Members and staff at Park Springs, the luxury retirement community in Stone Mountain, will celebrate the 100th birthday of Mrs. Garnie Thomas.

Mrs. Thomas, who has lived at Park Springs since 2009, was born at home in Atlanta, Georgia and has lived here for most of her life. She graduated with Honors from Girls’ High School, which was one of seven schools opened in 1872 as part of the original Atlanta public school system. (Fun fact: Girls’ High began in the John Neal/William Lyon Mansion, used by General William T. Sherman as his headquarters during his occupation of Atlanta. The site of the mansion at Mitchell and Washington Streets is now occupied by City Hall.)

Then, Mrs. Thomas went on to attend two years of Georgia Evening School (now Georgia State University), where she majored in business. She studied English, accounting and logic as well, and while attending school, she worked during the day at the Retail Credit Company (now Equifax).

After marrying the love of her life, Fred Thomas, in 1939, the young couple moved to Orlando, Florida.

While her husband served overseas during World War II, Mrs. Thomas and their first-born daughter Jenny moved back to Atlanta, and the family continued to live here upon Fred’s return, and the subsequent birth of their second daughter, Carolyn.

Mrs. Thomas spent most of life as a housewife caring for her family, but after her husband’s death in 1949, she went to work for the VA Hospital as a ward secretary where she was later was promoted to Secretary for the Chief of Staff. Mrs. Thomas retired after 35 years.

Mrs. Thomas enjoys writing and has gifted each of her four grandchildren with their own biography, documenting their individual life stories from birth to age 21. Currently, Ms. Thomas is writing her own autobiography, and also enjoys painting, reading, playing card games like Bridge, and Spite & Malice.

Happy 100th Birthday, Mrs. Thomas!
