East Lake is not only the eastern-most neighborhood in the city of Atlanta; it is also one of the region’s most historic as well. Seniors who reside inAtlanta’s retirement communities love visiting this quaint and quiet community for a number of reasons, but its small-town eateries and shops and its two excellent golf courses regularly top the bill.

About East Lake, Georgia

The neighborhood of East Lake sits about four and a half miles from the Atlanta’s bustling downtown, but while it’s conveniently close to the action, this community is highly residential and family oriented. The streets are lined with cozy cottages and bungalows built between 1910 and 1940 but the area also features older plantation-style homesteads like the famous antebellum home Meadow Nook, which built in 1856 makes it the second oldest home in the Atlanta area.

East Lake experienced a tumultuous period from the 1960s through the late-80s but by the 1990s, young urbanites started purchasing properties in the neighborhood and this started the community’s eventual turn around. Today, East Lake is a family-friendly community with a charming character and warm-hearted residents that’s wonderfully accented by locally owned shops and restaurants.

Places of Interest in East Lake, GA

East Lake’s most prominent attractions are its two prized golf courses – the East Lake Golf Club and the Charlie Yates Golf Course. The East Lake Golf Club is the home course of legendary golfer Bobby Jones and the site of the PGA’s annual Tour Championship.

Another popular favorite among the area’s seniors is the East Lake Farmers Market. Filled with locally grown produce, artisan-made foods and much more, this community treasure trove runs every Saturday from May to October from 9am to 1pm. Also at the Farmer’s Market are the annual Collard Greens Cook-Off in April and the Peachapalooza Cook-Off in July, at which money is raised for local schools and creative and inspired dishes are cooked and enjoyed by all those lucky enough to attend.

East Lake is also conveniently close to many of Atlanta’s and DeKalb County’s most popular tourist attractions. So, while you’re out visiting the Fernbank Science Center, the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, or Stone Mountain Park or you’re spending the day shopping Underground Atlanta, stopping by East Lake for a home-cooked meal in a small local restaurant and perusing the boutiques and antique stores is always a great way to finish your day out.
