Fulton County gets its unusual shape due to two defining factors. Prior to 1853, part of the area that’s now Fulton County was actually part of DeKalb County. In 1853, the land was separated and Fulton County was formed. Then, in 1932, the counties of Milton and Campbell were absorbed into Fulton and that’s why Fulton County is considered the 144th county to be created in Georgia’s history. The county is named after Robert Fulton, the inventor of the Clermont, the first commercially successful steamboat in 1807.
