Lack of social interaction as detrimental to ones health as smoking?

Home » Events » Lack of social interaction as detrimental to ones health as smoking?

Years ago I read a study that stated lack of social interaction among older adults can be as detrimental to their health as smoking.  I wish I saved it as I have cited that study often in group discussions but when questioned could not back it up until now.  While a recent study published in the archives of internal medicine ( http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1188033#METHODS) does not compare the ill effects of smoking to socialization it does site loneliness as a common source of distress and impaired quality of life in older people as summarized in an article published in Senior Housing News (http://seniorhousingnews.com/2012/06/20/more-lonely-hearts-study-links-loneliness-in-seniors-to-functional-decline-death/?utm_source=Senior+Housing+News+Daily+Email+Update&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1f8d4b9b7b-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN).  At Park Springs you’ll often hear our Members are our greatest asset.  I would agree and much of that thought is derived from their interaction with one another through the many activities, clubs and events held on campus and off.  If you are feeling isolated and would like to reconnect with old friends and make new ones, I encourage you to come visit, join our Key Club and attend an event.
