It’s a Matter of Pride is the theme of this year’s Park Springs Musical, written and directed by Member Marvin Himmel. In many ways it’s also the theme of Marvin’s life.

“When I was in the corporate entertainment business we would change the lyrics to the old song ‘It’s a Matter of Pride’ for awards programs and other events,” says Marvin.

It will be reprised once more as the opening act in the sixth annual musical, scheduled for December 2012. The show will feature a cast and support team of about 35 Members. The annual shows have become a major highlight of the Park Springs social calendar.

Although Marvin vowed his days in show business were over when he moved to the community, he got the itch about a year later. In 2007 he launched the first show to great reviews. Interest and attendance have climbed ever since. In 2007 the show ran for two nights with an attendance of 320 people. The 2011 show ran for 5 nights with an attendance of near 800.

“This year will be my sixth show,” says Marvin. “We’ll start selling tickets on October 15th and they’ll be gone in about a day and a half.”

The show takes up a great deal of Marvin’s considerable energy. But he also serves as chairman of the Park Springs Golf Association and as a member of the finance committee. Every year at Hanukkah time he leads Park Springs Members in a fun and instructional Menorah lighting ceremony for the 8 nights of the “festival.”

Once rehearsals begin in October, Marvin’s attention is squarely on the show, which continues to evolve until opening night. His task is made easier by his enthusiastic cast and the support of everyone at Park Springs.

“Our cast members range in age from about 75 to 93. We’re old but we’re pretty darn good! I challenge myself and the cast to do something a little more difficult every year,” says Marvin. “For us, it is truly a matter of pride.”

Just saw the CBS Sunday Morning show which had a feature on Marvin Himmel and the shows he has produced at and for your community. It was fantastic to see Marvin again and as vital as ever.
Though I was only 10, I remember Marvin and the “Make Believes” from Helsing’s Vodvil Lounge at Montrose and Sheridan in Chicago. My father, Frank “Tweet” Hogan did the booking and Marvin was a favorite act who performed there many times. The CBS show brought many memories of those days.
My brother Frank and I talked immediately after seeing the TV show and wanted Marvin to know that the Hogan family will never forget him.
