About Mason Mill, Georgia

Mason Mill Park is contained in a part of the region that was once the home to the Decatur Waterworks. Now included on the National Register of Historic Places, the Decatur Waterworks is regarded for its significance in engineering and landscape architecture. The actual flour mill from which Mason Mill Park gets its name was once built on the bank of the Burnt Fork River in the 1850s by Ezekiel Mason. After the death of Ezekiel and his wife, the land was inherited by their nephew, James Mason, in the late 19th Century. Shortly thereafter, he sold the 42-acre parcel of land to the city of Decatur and in 1907, the city used the land to build the area’s first public water system.
