In November, National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and National Caregiver Month, the Alzheimer’s Association invites everybody affected by Alzheimer’s to “Honor a Caregiver Today”:

“In the United States, there are more than 15 million Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers. We want to send these exceptional people a big “thank you” for everything they do. Honor them by sharing your tribute message!”

Earlier this year, Park Springs, the premier continuing care retirement community in Atlanta, hosted two keynote speakers from The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation / Caregivers United who shared tips and advice from Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers as well as personal observations and thoughtful support.

Here are some tips and strategies that address certain behaviors common in patients with Alzheimer’s from the Pocket Reference of Tips and Strategies prepared by Caregivers United:

When the patient is scared and unsure of where she is:

  • Walk with her
  • Hold her hand
  • Tell her she is safe and loved
  • Offer her a snack she can carry in her hand as she walks

  • Keep what you are telling her short and simple but not child-like.
  • Be patient. Give her lots of time to answer your question.
  • Her entire day depends on how you speak to her. Speak very calmly and know that your body language needs to reassure her.

In the Car:

  • Always talk to her about where you are going.
  • Help her put on her seat belt.
  • Use the child safety lock feature on the car doors so she is not able to unlock the car door from the inside.
