New Health Center Opening Summer 2017
Earlier this year Isakson Living, the Atlanta developer who in 2004 launched Park Springs, the region’s premier retirement community, invited Park Springs Members for a preview of its planned expansion: a new health center focused on outpatient rehabilitative care, skilled nursing and memory care to be completed in mid 2017.
There was a lot of interest in the new plans unveiled by Andy Isakson, Isakson Living’s Managing Partner, Brian Thomas, Vice President of Construction, and Jim Schneeberger, Executive Director of Park Springs.
Park Springs’ Community Hall was filled with Members who were eager to learn about Isakson Living’s goal to expand and improve the current healthcare services available at Park Springs to meet the future needs of the Members and area seniors.
“We started with a blank page. We asked a lot of questions and did a lot of listening – to you, our Members, to family members, to our Staff, and to industry experts, many months before we asked our architects to start the drawings for Pebblebrook,” said Andy Isakson.
The design for Pebblebrook is by the local architectural firm Foley Design, the same company that designed Park Springs more than ten years ago, ensuring continuity and visual harmony throughout the Park Springs complex.
“For the past year, we have asked focus groups and stakeholders, ‘What can we do better? What do you want to see?’ – really, all the work to create the new health center is done before the first dirt is turned,” added Brian Thomas, who noted that “Pebblebrook” will be an integral part of the Park Springs community and will be oriented toward the original campus.
Park Springs new health center is being constructed on a 6.75 acre parcel adjacent to the primary Park Springs campus. Pebblebrook, the name given the facility, will offer a new Skilled Nursing (SNF) and Alzheimer’s Care (ALZ) community to replace those functions in Park Springs’ existing health center known as Cobblestone.
“Pebblebrook will set new standards in the senior living industry, with its state-of-the-art Physical Therapy facilities, its large (4,000+ sq. ft.) community hall for speakers, events and other gatherings, and with a fresh and welcoming design that will allow for as much natural light as possible,” noted Isakson.
“There will be two courtyards, on two different levels, to enjoy Georgia’s mild seasons in a lovely landscaped setting. Also, there will be a Lobby Café, something that is not very common in a healthcare setting. This will be great for Members and visitors to get together for a bite or a cup of coffee.”
Cobblestone, the existing health care center on the original Park Springs campus, will be converted to 100% assisted living suites for a total of 52 suites.
Pebblebrook will feature three distinct components:
- an 18-unit rehab Skilled Nursing Facility adjacent to a state of the art physical therapy gym,
- 36 long term care SNF private units divided into two neighborhoods
- 36 ALZ private units divided into three neighborhoods, one of which is designed to accommodate Adult Day Programs and Services.
This will be an increase of 12 SNF beds from 42 to 54 and 22 ALZ beds from 14 to 36.
The individual suites in each neighborhood measure approximately 380 sq. ft. each, with a spacious private bathroom that can be separated by a ‘barn door’ on rails – a smart design solution to save space.
Care by Design
“We have embraced the ‘household model,’” explained Isakson. “Each neighborhood will have its own common dining room and dedicated country kitchen, living and activity areas, a fireplace and, most importantly, consistent staffing to create a sense of family.”
Isakson noted that the best part of Pebblebrook, and throughout Park Springs, are the dedicated caregivers and professional staff. “Right now we have a number of saints working at Cobblestone, and we will continue to attract the best-trained and brightest key staff to provide the finest care.”
Skilled Nursing Facility
Pebblebrook’s new design will differentiate long term and short term stays into designated neighborhoods to better address their specific needs. The physical therapy gym and program offering will be greatly expanded and improved.
The long term SNF and rehab SNF will be located on the same floor, supported by administration, a central nurse’s station, a 4,000 sq. ft. community hall and a family room for parties and events. Entering Pebblebrook, patients and guests will be greeted by a direct view into the lush courtyard and the Lobby Bistro.
Memory Care at Pebblebrook
The floor below SNF will be a secure setting for dementia care (ALZ). Like it will be in the long term SNF, 36 private units are divided into three neighborhoods. Each neighborhood will have its own dining area with a country kitchen, living area with a fireplace, activity area and direct access to outdoor space in a secure private courtyard.
One of the ALZ neighborhoods is programmed to accommodate 6 members in Adult Day Programs and Services mixed with higher functioning permanent dementia residents. Having Adult Day Programs and Services is a great benefit for couples where one spouse serves as a caregiver.
“Pebblebrook will offer the best possible memory care in Atlanta,” predicted Isakson, who was inspired to build Park Springs by the Isakson family’s search for a community to meet the needs of their parents, Ed and Julia Isakson.
ALZ and Adult Day Programs and Services will be open to admissions from outside the Park Springs community, while currently 6 SNF beds are planned for outside admissions in the first year.
Parking and Transportation
With the Pebblebrook expansion, about 100 employee parking spaces will also be relocated here, freeing up parking spaces around the Park Springs clubhouse.
Adaptable transportation will be offered to all Park Springs Members, likely on a regular schedule, between the main campus and Pebblebrook.
