Project 1310Park Springs, the luxury retirement community in Stone Mountain (GA) joined 57 other senior living communities managed by Life Care Services or CRSA to match or surpass the mileage attained by a woman marathoner, an employee of a community managed by Life Care Services, who overcame a personal tragedy through exercise.

Members of Park Springs CCRC, Atlanta’s premier senior living community, participated in a nationwide challenge to surpass 1,310 miles of cardiovascular exercise between February 17 and March 18, 2014, according to Park Springs’ Fitness Center Manager Reggie Porter. Park Springs achieved a total of 1,500 miles during the four-week period. The community was one of 57 senior living communities managed by either Life Care Services or CRSA throughout the United States to participate in the challenge.

The challenge, Project 1,310, was inspired by Elizabeth Proffitt, marketing and sales director at a community managed by Life Care Services in Reading, Pa. After the untimely death of her husband in 2005, Proffitt sought a way to overcome her grief. With the help of a friend and the support of her employer, she made it her goal to complete 50 marathons in all 50 states before the age of 50. She completed her quest in the fall of 2013 at the age of 49. Project 1,310 is named in recognition of the number of miles Proffitt ran in 50 marathons: 1,310.

Life Care Services or CRSA, both LCS Companies, provide management services to 120 senior living communities throughout the United States.

“Project 1,310 fit right in with our lifestyle here at Park Springs,” said resident Avis Fox. “We live life to the fullest and aren’t afraid to challenge ourselves to achieve better, healthier lives.”

Project 1,310 guidelines allowed participants to log their 1,310 miles by walking, running, swimming or other cardiovascular exercise. Residents recorded their mileage using pedometers or other measuring devices for one month. A special Intranet site was created containing helpful Project 1,310 information, including motivational videos recorded by Proffitt, a performance-tracking database and a display of system-wide results. Project 1,310 achievements will be recognized on local and national bases.

According to Liz Bush, Sr. Vice President/Director of Senior Housing Marketing and Sales for LCS, “Project 1,310 reflects the strong culture of wellness and fitness at LCS, where we promote Eight Dimensions of Wellness.” Part of The Lifestyle and Health Services Wellness program, the eight dimensions are intellectual, physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational and health services.

“Through Project 1,310, thousands of seniors have reaped the physical, emotional, cognitive and social benefits that exercise can provide,” Bush added. “The program certainly built a sense of competition and camaraderie in the 58 participating communities.”
