The view from their 1,960 square feet Golf View Villa at the Park Springs retirement community is a big change. After moving from their home in Rochester (NY), Dr. and Mrs. James and Joan Stormont now see the dome of Stone Mountain – right from their breakfast room window!

Just last year, the vibrant couple decided to move closer to three of their four children as well as to Dr. Stormont’s brother, Dick, all of whom live in the greater Atlanta area. Even though they had moved twelve times in the early years of their 63-year marriage, they had lived the longest in Rochester, where Dr. Stormont practiced as an internist and gastroenterologist specialist, and where Mrs. Stormont had built an impressive career as a professional photographer. She was especially known for her sophisticated environmental black and white portraits, using only available light.

After completing his studies at Yale, Dr. Stormont graduated in 1951 from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons (graduating in the top 10% of his class) and enlisted in the U.S. Navy reserves. Shortly after that, he was called to serve as Medical Officer for eight destroyers during the Korean War. During this time, his wife and their first child moved from the California Naval Base back to Manhattan to be near family. Here Mrs. Stormont worked in radio at CBS during a very significant period: this was the time when the broadcasting company was conducting its initial color television tests.

Mrs. Stormont graduated with a B.A. degree from Smith College, in Northampton, MA, where she was given a major award her senior year for her skill as a dance choreographer. After moving to Rochester and raising their family of two sons and two daughters, Mrs. Stormont decided to enroll in the Rochester Institute of Technology earning a degree in Photography.

Subsequently, she began her career and later presented two one-woman shows of her work in Rochester, as well as one at Park Springs. Her first show, ‘Of the Artist / By the Artist’ included portraits of the 25 best artists in Upstate New York, along with a sample of their work. Her second show displayed black and white portraits of all 62 members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. All of her work was created in the homes, offices or gardens of the individuals she photographed. It was developed and printed in her own darkroom.

In addition to their successful and rewarding careers, and enjoying their extended family that now also includes nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Dr. and Mrs. Stormont love to travel, and Mrs. Stormont often hosts “Travels with Joan” at Park Springs, presenting her illustrated talks of more than 12 countries.

Both are still avid golf players. “Being close to the golf courses at Stone Mountain Park is a major benefit of living here, and we were even pictured recently in a promotional ad for Park Springs,” notes Mrs. Stormont.

Dr. Stormont, who continues to be involved with research work in Rochester, especially in the area of Crohn’s disease, is an active member of Park Springs’ Health and Wellness Committee, while Mrs. Stormont serves as a volunteer on the Activities Committee.

Both Dr. and Mrs. Stormont agree that they moved at Park Springs at the right time, and they are pleased with their surroundings. “Here, we are close to family, but we have also been able to make new friends who share our enthusiasm for celebrating each day, and living a healthy and active life. Everyone at Park Springs has been so welcoming, and we are happy that we could make this major move together.”
